SUMMIT, An Earth Services Company is seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to join our Finance team as a Intermediate Accountant (Competition # 26-06-0755) in Calgary, Alberta. This position will report directly to the Director of Finance & Accounting.

What to Expect:

The Intermediate Accountant will support the Director of Finance & Accounting in monthly financial close processes, account reconciliations, financial reporting, and day-to-day accounting operations across multiple entities.  The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of accounting principles, and a desire to contribute in a fast paced, collaborative environment.

You will be supported by the entire Summit organization which consists of a dynamic team of skilled project managers, technical administrators, business development professionals, an in-house IT department and many other highly experienced, and educated professionals.

Job Duties:

You will carry out your duties in consultation with the Director of Finance & Accounting on all matters.

Your primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and managing reporting packages.

  • Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, prepaids, and other month-end adjustments.

  • Help manage the month and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timely reporting.

  • Support the Director of Finance & Accounting with the maintenance of general ledger accounts and reconciliations.

  • Support analysis of financial results and assist with variance explanations.

  • Coordinate and assist with annual audits, including preparation of financial working papers, schedules, and supporting documentations for external auditors.

  • Assist in the preparation of financial reports for management, operational teams, and financial stakeholders.

  • Maintain internal controls and ensure adherence to company policies and procedures.

  • Support the accounts payable functions, including generating, reviewing, and approving AP related transactions.

  • Support accounts receivable functions to ensure accurate recording and payment processing.

  • Assist with customer account reconciliations, collections support as required, and monitor aging reports to investigate outstanding balances.

  • Assist with payroll entries and related account reconciliations.

  • Support GST, PST, and other regulatory findings.

  • Assist with lender reporting and covenant compliance documentation.

  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, internal controls, and participate in ERP and financial systems initiatives.

  • Assist with financial analysis and help identify areas of cost control, profit optimization, and process improvement.

  • Assist with special projects and ad hoc financial analysis as required.

  • Collaborate with project managers and operational teams to ensure accurate project accounting and cost tracking.

  • Support intercompany accounting and consolidations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

  • In possession of, or working towards a Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) designation and in good standing with the relevant regulatory body.

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in accounting or finance, preferably within a consulting or professional services company.

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting.

  • Experience with financial reporting, general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, and month-end close processes.

  • Advanced Excel skills, including financial modelling and analysis.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills, and ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines.

  • Excellent attention to detail.

  • Strong critical thinking and analytical problem-solving skills.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills to partner with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment and work effectively in a team setting.

The following are considered an asset

  • Experience in accounting or finance within the oil and gas or environmental consulting industry would be beneficial.

  • Experience in successfully migrating a company’s ERP system, including data conversion, system configuration, and user training.

  • Working knowledge of Acumatica and/or ERP Systems.
